Since I just attended a wonderful Bike Texas safety class, I thought I would pass along a reminder of the 7 Texas Bicycle Laws that everyone should remember and obey:

  1. Obey all traffic signs and signals.  This means STOP at stop lights and stop signs!
  2. Ride in the same direction as other traffic.  We all know how disconcerting it is as drivers to be confronted with "bike salmon".  Plus, in going against traffic, a rider cannot see the appropriate signs (among other things).
  3. Use hand and arm signals.  I know that a lot of drivers don't know what they  mean, but we MUST use them - it's the law!
  4. One rider per saddle.  That one is easy.  I think that's meant more for the under 11 set.
  5. Keep at least one hand on the handlebars.  NO TEXTING!  Yes, I have seen riders texting while riding.
  6. If you ride at night you must have a white light on the front or red light or reflector on the rear.
  7. Use effective brakes capable of making the braked wheel skid.  Make sure that your brakes are closed after changing a flat!
Not following these rules can result in a ticket.  Adhering to these rules can save lives, skin, and money.
